| Welp, given how long I have been a wrestling fan, this is basically going to be a collection of my ten fondest memories about the business. Here goes: LOOK AT THIS GUY. This guy hitting a MOONSAULT on your friend and mine Sting is the very first thing related to wrestling that I saw as a little kid. The sight of this larger-than-life mountain of a man, flying through the air like the world's most muscular butterfly, pretty much single-handedly made me into a wrestling fan, right there and then. Arguably the best promo man of all times, long before Steve Austins and the Dwayne Johnsons took the world by storm. What made him TRULY great, however, was his uncanny ability to have fantastic matches with just about anyone: you could be the sloppiest, dumbest, least talented musclehead in the roster, but the moment you stepped in the ring with him, he would make you into a star. I cannot even begin to count the men who wouldn't have been as successful in the business without him. After two WCW guys, finally a WWF/E guy in the top three. And what a guy he is: you know how some wrestlers don't make it far because, as good as they are in the ring, they lack showmanship and charisma? You know how some other are good on the mic, but are held back by their lack of in-ring talent? Well, Michaels was great at both, he was the perfect mix: from this standpoint, he was perhaps the best of all times. Unfortunately, he also was one of the most obnoxious, insufferable prick in the business, refusing to work with guys and pulling backstage politics stunts left and right: he apparently got better after discovering religion in the 2000s... Which gave us the Vince vs God angle, so yeah. How WWE did NOT delete that from their account is beyond me. This guy had more charisma than all other wrestlers in history combined, but he lacked the technical abilities: how did he make up for it? BY PUTTING HIS LIFE (literally!) ON THE LINE. He was so in love with the business that, for the sake of telling a good story, he accepted to (in completely random order): be powerbombed by Vader on concrete, do a hangman spot where his ear was literally ripped apart, be speared through a flaming table, be thrown off the HiaC cage twice in the same night, and God knows how many more. On other news, a twisted thumb once caused Sin Cara to break character and call off a match with Alberto Del Rio. You are two positions below your real life rival, sorry Bret. Fantastic in the ring and excellent on the mic, Bret was, for all intent and purposes, the perfect babyface. Unfortunately for him, he reached the peak of his career in a time period, during which being the perfect babyface wasn't considered cool anymore. This led to a downfall in his career in WWF, so he jumped ship to WCW... Just as WCW was entering its dumbest, screwiest, most destructive period. Suffices to say, that didn't end well. A certified legend and arguably the biggest star to ever achieve international success outside of WWE/F, the sole reason why he doesn't rank higher in this list is that, for some reason, he has played the role of the dumb babyface (you know, the one whose friends always end up turning on him) for most of his career. And I just cannot get behind dumb babyfaces. Now I know it is technically not his fault (the bookers wrote him into such angles), but... Well, one would think that, after such a long, glorious career, a prominent wrestler such as Sting would have at least a degree of creative control over his character, right? But apparently, the creative control card is something only Hogan and his buddies pulled regularly, both in WCW and in TNA. Oh, and he once teamed with Robocop. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1wefe_robocop-in-wcw-capital-combat-1990_sport Of course I am serious. This is a man who earned my respect simply by remaining in the business. The fact that a man could remain true to his passion and keep on doing his job with professionalism, despite how consistently the bookers have been throwing all sorts of crap at him over the years, is nothing short of amazing. First debuting as Fake Diesel (by which I mean, he wore a wig and pretended to be Kevin Nash, who had jumped to WCW earlier that month. That didn't end well), Glenn Jacobs was then repackaged as Jerry Lawler's EVIL DENTIST. That didn't end well, either. So he returned as the Undertaker's demented brother Kane, whose run with the company included being accused of necrophilia (complete with Triple H reenacting the alleged corpse-screwing), having his backstory retconned approximately 382947 times, raping and impregnating Lita, falling on top of Lita following a chair shot from one Gene Snitsky (which caused her to miscarry), electrocuting Shane McMahon's balls, setting Jim Ross on fire (oh by the way, Daniel Bryan was once fired for pulling the tie of an announcer. It was too violent an act, you see), jobbing to his brother, teaming up with his brother, turning on his brother, jobbing to his brother AGAIN, ruining Zack Ryder's career on the way to persuading John Cena to embrace the hate, and becoming a corporate suit. Somehow, none of the above caused him to ask for his release. Mad props there, man. Ok be honest with me here. If a guy registered on this site and said, "my gimmick is that of a wrestling undertaker who is actually undead, and possesses magical powers granted to him by a misterious urn", would you take him seriously? Somehow, Mark Calaway took this gimmick and built a legendary career on it. The fact that the same man, who consistently put on five star matches with all sorts of opponents, could then do things like kidnapping Stephanie McMahon (or Teddie Long), hanging the Big Bossman, burying Paul Bearer in cement or remotely causing Bob Orton to bleed, all the while remaining absolutely credible in the eyes of the fans, is something that will never cease to amaze me. And of course, we are talking about a man who, in 22 appearences at WM, managed to string together 20 victories... And that thing with Giant Gonzalez, before being defeated in somewhat anticlimactic fashion by Brock Lesnar. With Cena on his way to matching (if not beating) Ric Flair's record of world titles held, the streak is the one feat that nobody will ever recreate. Another guy whom I respect for his willingness to keep on doing his job, despite the crap creatives have thrown at him since he first debuted. And in his case, I use the expression "since he first debuted" very literally: as a trainee, he was an impressive super-heavyweight who was legitimately capable of dropkicks, so in his very first match as a professional wrestler, WCW creatives decided to... Put him in a MONSTER TRUCK SUMO MATCH ON THE ROOF OF A BUILDING. At the end of which he was PUSHED OFF SAID ROOF, presumably to his death. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xdds9n_hogan-kills-the-giant-big-show_sport What, you thought I was making that up? But don't worry, he got better, to the point that, later that same night, he won the WCW world title from Hogan by DRY HUMPING HIM with help from The Yeti (who for some reason was dressed like a mummy). https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2hisj_wcw-yeti-a-halloween-havoc-95_news Since then, he has been in the business, first in WCW and then in WWF/E, for 21 years, during which he has turned, from face to heel to face to heel, a grand total of 20 (TWENTY!) times. The fact that he has never tried to kill any of the bookers is reason enough for me to genuinely respect the man. #10 - That guy who was in the Triple Threat with HBK and HHH at WM XX Look, I know why WWE would want to erase Chris Benoit from their history and recordbooks, to the point of carefully avoiding to even mention his name... And well, considering the circumstances of his death, I cannot really blame them: in fact, I myself have dropped the man from spot #1 to spot #10 in my personal chart, solely because of what he did. But now matter how hard I try, I cannot possibly forget about his extraordinary matches, his superb performances he put on in every company he wrestled for. WM XX is my favorite PPV of all times solely because of that shot of him hugging Eddie Guerrero (whom I left out of this list to avoid going on a rant about how his death was exploited) in the middle of the ring, the coronation of the hero's journey of two men who, after being consistently held back in both WCW and WWF, finally had made it to the top of the world. For that moment, for his incredible matches in WCW, for the brilliant storylines he was part of in WWF/E, and for his incredible, unique style (nobody has ever been as good as him at combining ferocious aggression with technical skills), Chris Benoit is, and by far, my true #1, the one wrestler I truly admired and idolized... Until he did what he did. Welp, there you have it. I really sound like an old man right now, don't I? :p |
