PostSubject: The PWI 500 Top 10 For 2017   4 - The PWI 500 Top 10 For 2017 EmptySeptember 1st 2017, 9:59 pm

PWI's annual top 500 wrestlers list has hit the presses. I haven't gotten my copy yet in the mail, but they've released not only #1, but the entire top 10.

For your consideration, their grading scale is measured off of the following attributes as listed in the publication:
-Win-loss record
- In-ring ability
-Influence on the sport
-Success against the highest grade of competition
-Activity

The grading period is usually July of the previous year to June of the current year.

And now, the top ten list itself:
1. Kazuchika Okada
2. AJ Styles
3. Kevin Owens
4. Roman Reigns
5. Kenny Omega
6. Shinsuke Nakamura
7. Dean Ambrose
8. Samoa Joe
9. Bobby Roode
10. The Miz

Leave your opinions, accolades, and torches below. 4 - The PWI 500 Top 10 For 2017 1f605

Hehe
To be honest I understand the build up, and I do like him better than I do Baron Corbin (He needs to improve his mic skills... And his twitter skills.) and I won't mind to see Roman win against Lesnar at WrestleMania 34.

My opinion is that Roman should be built up as a heel but obviously Meekmahan doesn't see it that way. Why isn't he playing off the hate of the crowd? If they got Roman to do like they did with The Rock it would elevate him and he would take off to the next level.

But right now? He's going to stall and yes haters will keep on hating.

PWI 500 is always suspect. If you look at what they say they are grading on then the list would make complete sense if you disregard the "in-ring skill" part. The list makes sense then.

-Win-loss record - I can believe all these ppl prolly had a goat Win Loss record
-Influence on the sport - Pretty much just means they are high profile
-Success against the highest grade of competition - Not sure what this means it seems very subjective so I guess all these ppl could have it
-Activity - They were pretty much all full timers

Now this is only my opinion:
- The quality of his matches
- The quality of his promos
- The opponents he faced (And defeated)
- The Championships he won

The guy is money clearly, the ''New Face Of America'' gimmick was a failure but when Kevin Owens is allowed to be Kevin Owens (And not the whiny little bitch we currently see on TV.) then he is total money.

Honestly Joe shouldn't be there. He hasn't done much of anything in the past 6 months, and granted I know it also counts the second half of 2016 but still... I don't think he did enough to earn a spot on the list.

Owens at 3 is VERY generous. He definitely deserves a spot somewhere... but 3? I don't know.

Reigns at 4 is correct, stay mad.

I agree with the rest, and I'm glad to see Miz getting credit for the great year that he had.

My brief take on each pick (or at least brief for me).

1. Kazuchika Okada- A natural pick considering his title reign and match quality, not to mention the lack of any static, full-time, undisputed world champions in any other fed in the grading period.
2. AJ Styles: AJ's held down the Smackdown brand with two exemplary title reigns with great matches and victories attached to both.  Even as US champ he tends to be the focal point of the show.
3. Kevin Owens: While Kevin had a murky Universal Title run rife with run-ins and walk outs, you can't deny the air wave dominance of JeriKO.  His US Title run was also entertaining.
4. Roman Reigns: Retired the Undertaker, had a great success rate against superior talents, but otherwise I think Roman's spot might be the murkiest going off of the grading system.  'taker might be his saving grace.
5. Kenny Omega: Won plenty of gold but had what I'd consider a middling win-loss record in 2016. Had highly regarded matches.  If this year's G1 were in the criteria, he and Naito would be higher up the 500, oh and Naito BETTER be in the top 15 AT LEAST!
6. Shinsuke Nakamura: Had great NXT success, which is what really rounds out his grading period.  I think he was also undefeated in singles action on Smackdown during the grading time frame.
7. Dean Ambrose: Was WWE Champion, US Title, etc. etc.  I can't deny his accolades, but I'd personally add a strike for harboring Ellsworth as a sidekick.
8. Samoa Joe: Was in the NXT Title picture for at least 6 or 7 months of the grading period. Was made to look strong as a solid upper midcard heel on Raw that could be thrust into the title picture at any moment as a strong contender.  I'd say he's been 50-50 win-loss wise on the main roster, with his wins being dominant, albeit fairly mundane, which might be a strike against him for some.
9. Bobby Roode: Had a fairly dominating  NXT run against varied levels of competitors.  While his reign was successful, it was during a very formative time for NXT where quite a few of it's bigger names had left for greener pastures.  I think his spot on the list benefited greatly from the developmental roster's growing pains.  I love Roode, the music, and the gimmick, but he was the right guy at the right place at the right time.  While critically deserved, I give that 9 spot an asterisk.
10. The Miz: Miz has had fairly high profile feuds against the likes of Cena and Ambrose within the grading period, along with some great segments on TV and Talking Smack.  He managed to make the likes of Dolph Ziggler relevant in  good feuds with great matches attached to them, and propped up the IC title on both brands.  While I do think he's entertaining and a major asset to the WWE, his in-ring success against big names leaves something to be desired. For that reason, tacked on with his lack of World gold within the grading period, I think someone else could have taken this spot.  I've seen calls for Naito, and considering his growth and success over names in singles action as IC champ, I can't argue against him in the place of Miz.  Straight up: Miz fought Cena and lost.  Naito fought AJ Styles and Tanahashi in the 2016 G1 and beat both, even though he didn't take the bracket.  I'm all for this generation having a 'Piper-esque' figure who gets by more with his mouth than his fists, but that Naito tho.

There are flaws with the PWI 500 criteria in this modern era of wrestling.  Promotions like Lucha Underground, who don't run through most of the grading period should get some leeway.  There's a strong bias toward WWE that's fair in some instances but not in others, and a dated predisposition against part-time talents that should be within  the parameters of consideration.  Overall though, I can't argue with this list based on their current criteria.  I have my biases, but arguments over 'definitive' lists is like 10% of the internet's bandwidth (the rest of course is devoted to illegal downloading, porn, and cats).

PostSubject: Re: The PWI 500 Top 10 For 2017   4 - The PWI 500 Top 10 For 2017 EmptySeptember 2nd 2017, 10:57 am

1. Kazuchika Okada - He has the undisputed best title reign in the past ten years of the industry currently. He's put on multiple 6-star matches with Omega (Who should be #3 imo) and is a household name despite never setting foot in WWE as a wrestler.
2. AJ Styles - He is a walking dream match. In less in a year, he's made Smackdown his show and the US title the second most important belt in WWE.
3. Kevin Owens - The other reason why the US belt matters so much. He can put on a great feud with anyone, and somehow he and Jericho kept Raw afloat before Goldberg and Brock returned. He should be #4 though with Kenny occupying this space.
4. Roman Reigns - He had a slow start after Wrestlemania, but the work he's done with Strowman has been the highlight of the summer. He's starting to gain momentum but he needs a couple of more big feuds to make him the face of the company. That'll be tough if...
5. Kenny Omega - This guy gets signed. That won't happen though because NJPW isn't stupid enough to let him go (i hope). What can I really say? His collection of 6-star matches speak for themselves. He's a natural in-ring storyteller who can do so much with so little.
6. Shinsuke Nakamura - From the moment he walked into NXT he owned WWE fans. He has something that the company hasn't seen in a while: instant marketable charisma. He had a great NXT run and has put on great matches with Bobby Roode and Samoa Joe.
7. Dean Ambrose - This may sound controversial but he shouldn't be in the top 10. I love the guy, but his feud with Miz was carried by the latter. He did good work with AJ, but once again I felt the feud was carried by the latter. He's been given a raw deal with WWE, but things are starting to look up since teaming with Seth.
8. Samoa Joe - Like Nakamura, since arriving to WWE, he's connected with fans but in the opposite way as a heel. He's a natural promoer and was a great NXT champion. Now I'm just waiting for that world title run
9. Bobby Roode - When he said NXT was his, I believed him. It's been a while since a champ elevated a whole brand under his reign, but I felt like Bobby Roode did that with NXT.
10. The Miz - This dude should be higher, but then again look at the people on this list. The Miz is at the top of his heel game at the moment. He was the valet/wife, the miztourage and can promo with the best of them. His current IC run is probably going down as one of the best in a while.

Kevin is worthy of his spot. I don't question Roman being above Omega, only because, Roman is in the WWE. A much bigger platform. That has to be the reason why.

But Goldberg bodied him so hard. Roman retired Taker, and is treated as untouchable. IDK, I feel like Owens should be like number five.
