| From a New Japan booking standpoint, Naito as the winner would makes sense. I've dug into a lot of research on G1's heading into this one (the first I've ever attempted to follow), and it's not uncommon for victories over the champion in the G1 to lead to title shots down the road. So essentially, Omega doesn't need to win G1 to get Okada in the future. From a storytelling perspective however it makes for an awesome story for the outlying anti-ace Naito to win the G1 and get a chance to spit on the golden boy Rainmaker and his championship before trying to take both and throw them into the pacific ocean. Such are the ways of Naito and the LIJ. |

True and Omega did get a win over Okada. Usually whoever makes the biggest impact in beating the IWGP Heavyweight Champ during the tourney, usually gets the next shot. Example. Naomichi Marufuji last year after he beat Okada. |
