| I like reading. I know, I'm horrible, but if any of you others like reading as well, maybe you can post a favorite quote from a book you've read. I will begin with mine.

| “At that moment, in the sunset on Watership Down, there was offered to General Woundwort the opportunity to show whether he was really the leader of vision and genius which he believed himself to be, or whether he was no more than a tyrant with the courage and cunning of a pirate. For one beat of his pulse the lame rabbit's idea shone clearly before him. He grasped it and realized what it meant. The next, he had pushed it away from him.”

| “In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can’t build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery, and death. I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness, I hear the ever approaching thunder, which will destroy us too, I can feel the sufferings of millions and yet, if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come right, that this cruelty too will end, and that peace and tranquility will return again.” - Diary of Anne Frank

| "now a new and better peach, now a seedless grape" - H.G. Wells' The Time Machine (1895)
Context is that the time traveller has just arrived in the future and he thinks its some sort of communistic paradise where selective breeding has made fruit (and live stock and flowers and shit) just generally genetically superior. My first feeling towards this is hilarity; it still cracks me up that 19th Century science fiction writers were fantasising about the day that mankind will be free to eat grapes without the burden of having to spit out seeds. My second feeling is that it is mind-blowing that H.G.Wells successfully predicted the emergence of something so specific as seedless grapes. |

| "Not a groan, not a sigh, just a mass agony in silence." Night, Elie Wiesel
This guy is a holocaust survivor. He wrote a book of accounts of some of the shit he went through. There's a part where the camp he's in is about to be liberated, but the germany ss soldiers march the prisoners out of the camp towards a different one. At one point, in the snow, and naked, they let the prisoners rest. That's when he looks around at his people and thinks that quote. |
