NXT: A Critique Empty
PostSubject: NXT: A Critique   NXT: A Critique EmptyOctober 16th 2015, 5:43 pm

Let me start off by saying I LOOOOOVE NXT!  I personally think the WWE Network is worth the 9.99 a month for NXT alone and make a point to watch it every week.  But that isn't to say it's perfect.  I've had these thoughts about NXT lately and I wanna know what you guys think.

*  NXT needs some more singles heels in its roster.  Right now the majority of heels are in the tag team division.  The only single competitors who I can think of that are heels are Corbin and Breeze.  And while they're good, they can't carry the entire heel division.  You could count Rhyno too I guess, but he's past his prime so I don't really count him.  It's one of the reasons I think Samoa Joe needs to be a heel right now to give NXT more villains.

*  I personally think the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic had the wrong teams in the finals.  While the tournament was a good idea and while I don't have anything against the teams who were in the finals, I just feel that since Takeover: Respect was clearly not going to be about the NXT Title, they should've taken the opportunity to focus on other things...like the tag teams.  As such a feel two ACTUAL teams should've been in the finals, namely Enzo & Cass vs. Jordan & Gable!  This would've put you're most athletic team (Jordan & Gable) against your most over team and charismatic (Enzo & Cass).  Not to mention I find it unforgivable that there champions didn't at least make it to the semi-finals!  If they had used the finals to singla Joe's heel turn as I said above, it would've been ok.  Joe could've turned on Balor, claiming he was upset that he comes in with all this prestige and all he gets is a spot in a tag tournament and that he was using it as a way to get close to Balor.  It didn't hurt the overall appeal of the show, just could've been better.

*  WWE needs to let guys stay down in NXT a bit longer.  I know we all wanna see certain guys come up and be seen on WWE TV, but I think that not only hurts NXT by weakening their roster, but it also may hurt the individual person as well.  Bo Dallas was HUGE in NXT, but in WWE, I guess he doesn't BOLIEVE enough.  The Ascension made NXT a wasteland, but in WWE their push is a waste.  See my point.  I know eventually guys need to move up, but there's no shame in my book staying on NXT a good while before getting called up.  At this point I'd almost say it's even better.

*  Takeover: Brooklyn was an awesome show, but there were a few things I feel they needed to do.  For one I didn't like how all the faces won.  I feel a show needs to be a balance of faces and heels winning.  Also I feel the show needed to end with a shocker!  The last three shows at Full Sail ended with shockers (1.  Kevin Owens attacking Sami  2. Owens winning NXT Title  3. Samoa Joe debuting).  But I feel it was more important here, being that it was the first time NXT had a show on that level.

*  Tyler Breeze needs to be allowed to win more against better names.  This goes with what I mentioned above because (SPOILERS!!!) he lost to Jushin Liger at Brooklyn.  I know Jushin is a legend and that his being in WWE was a big deal and that they were showing him respect, but Breeze needed that victory, not him!  And recently he lost to Crews.  Ok that one I get since Crews is new and their building him up, but the last win I can think of to Breeze's name is Bull Dempsey and that was on a regular show.  And now with the hints to a Breeze vs. Joe feud, and Joe also being undefeated, I don't see him winning that either.  This guy is a great wrestler who makes what would be an otherwise stupid gimmick and makes it work!

If you guys have any thoughts, feel free to add them.

I kinda' agree with all points stated. I do wanna add an unpopular opinion; WWE should take it easy on bringing up them big Indy names to their NXT Roster. Piling them up one by one just to satisfy the never full stomach of the internet marks and not developping any of them the way they should be kinda' squashes all the buzz surrounding their arrival as they'll be subjected to portraying dull characters that the audience would sooner than later grow bored of.

Exactly!  That goes with my point of them bringing guys up from NXT too quickly.  Plus I'm all for any decision that goes against the internet marks since I feel they A.) are the most fickle fans out there who as you said are never full, and B.) that they don't know half as much as they believe

After watching through some NXT Takeover matches of Sasha Banks, that full sail crowd is awful. Chanting 'this is awesome' 30 seconds into Sasha/Bayley even though they haven't done anything, fuck off.

NxT has been a little underwhelming recently. I think due to its popularity WWE should simply run NxT as a separate brand and not think about "Calling People Up".

Lets face it this is what the resurgence of ECW should have been like

I kind of agree with Lumen. Not 100%, though, since part of me feels that turning NXT in to a brand would make people forget that there are guys on the roster who are still trying to develop their skills and character. However, a big problem lately is that the main roster is FILLED with top tier talent and bringing people up just makes the shows more messy and cluttered. While there are people on the main shows I can't stand like Sheamus and Big Show, they're not the people that will be relegated down the card when people from NXT are called up. I mean, you have guys in the lower card that should be upper midcarders and uppermidcarders that should be main eventers. If that's not proof enough that the roster is already full then I don't know what is. NXT already has a pretty legitimate roster as it is so I could definitely see it working as a third brand, in theory.

Finally someone who agrees with me. I hate the full sail crowd sometimes. I remember recently they turned on Samoa Joe and not long ago they were chanting his name.

Yeah, the Full Sail crowd were pretty cool at first but they've gotten pretty annoying. NXT needs to move around some more like with Takeover because the current crowd is filled with a bunch of attention seeking marks who'll chant for anything. There are still some cool moments though like when Gable was over at Takeover: Respect and the crowd was chanting "Ga-ble" to Angle's theme.

I don't know, maybe I think NXT need another title. I can't stand seeing more than ten people fighting over one belt.

If you guys have any thoughts, feel free to add them.

Point 1: I don't think NXT needs more heels necessarily.  It wouldn't hurt, but not having so many doesn't either in a product ran essentially like an indy where respect and titles and competition mean something.  I feel like the Dusty Rhodes Invitational was pretty much used to build Joe vs Finn.  Joe keeps giving him sideways looks, pawing at the title, and kind of disagreeing with what Finn's motives are, to a point Joe could easily turn heel just for the gold and Finn 'hotdogging' throughout the tourney.

Point 2: I think the Dusty Rhodes Tag Memorial was a debacle all around, honestly. Most of the matches didn't even make weekly programming, and I agree that a tag team should be as effective as a tandem as a singles superstar is as a singles, meaning pairing two singles doesn't make the same chemistry or expertise of a regular tag team.  I was actually hoping they'd use this tourney to further fine tune the Mechanic's characters and gimmicks and showcase Jordan and Gable.  Enzo and Cass seemed like the obvious shoe in to win, but as soon as singles started taking up the semi brackets, I knew where it was going. I was at least hoping on Baron turning on Rhyno, or Joe leaving Finn high and dry.

Point 3: There are definitely guys who work on an indy/NXT level that don't translate to the main audience.  Adam Rose comes to mind.  With Balor's remarks on not wanting to leave NXT, I actually do hope it becomes a 2nd brand, and that more talents do stick around.  I get that the main roster pay's better, and that it's everyone's dream to be there, but what NXT is doing seems way more involved, important, and relevant than what's going on for 3 hours on Raw.  NXT sparked the Diva's 'revolution' and keeps carrying the banner better than the main roster, and a majority of NXT's byproducts shot up the ranks quickly.  So yeah, NXT is the place to be.

Point 4: Every show can't be a shocker.  That leads to crash television of the 90's that ultimately desensitizes the crowd when something actually huge happens.  I do think the crux of NXT's booking is the babyface dominance, wanting to 'send the fans home happy' every show, but I can't completely fault them.  It's resulted in some huge fan moments.

Point 5: I don't think Breeze has really lost anything in his defeats, especially considering the legacy and acumen of the men he's fallen to.  I do agree that he needs a win badly, though.  He went to being headliner to someone who could easily lose to "Perfect 10" Tye Dillinger.

NXT isn't flawless when you boil down to the bone, but it's still the best booked thing in the WWE right now.  The tag division really has lost a lot of heat, ironically a lot of which was lost during the tag tournament with Enzo and Cass disappearing and (I can't believe I'm saying this) Blake and Murphy being scarce.  Maybe now that some more teams are built up a bit more despite the snafu tourney, and the Women's Division has taken huge hits and finds itself in retool mode, tag wrestling will come back into prevalence on the program.

One of my negative opinions is the signing of Ciampa.  I like Ciampa, I really do, but his style isn't befitting of NXT or WWE.  His masse appeal is in being stiffer than hell and doing crazy power moves.  Even in NXT, he doesn't really have the size or liberties to be the Sicilian Psychopath he was and still is on the indies.

Point 1:  You're right in that not having a lot of heels doesn't hurt, and that NXT is run like an indy, but it's not really an indy show.  And NXT is still mostly a story driven program and you need heels for that.  You're right that it isn't a big problem for them, but I still think they need at least a few more heels in singles competition.  Maybe they could build up "Perfect 10" Tye into a stronger position.

Point 4:  Not every show can end on a shocker, I do get that, but I wasn't saying every show should.  I was saying Brooklyn needed to end on a shocker simply for the statement it would've sent.  I would've shown everyone that the traveling NXT matters, which is kinda why I feel they had a majority the Dusty Tag Team matches happen during traveling house shows.  Yeah it hurts for us who could only watch matches via the Network, but it sends an important statement to other places as well.  It's a slippery slop either way you look at it.

Point 5:  You do bring up a good point about Breeze, and while being in matches against these guys is saying he's important in a way, a stronger statement would be if he won.  Him being put into a match with Jushin was huge and an honor for him.  But imagine how much his stock would've risen if he won?  I'm just afraid he's getting too much of a pattern here, and after too many loses a wrestlers stock will eventually start to fall.

You do bring up a lot of other good points that I agree with and would love it for people to continue this debate.

Reading all this would take me longer than watching an episode of NXT.

I agree about Tyler Breeze, I don't take him as a serious threat anymore.
