| Now I'm gonna try and put this as PC as I can because I don't wanna have an argument, I want something to be explained to me, because I do not understand.
Some people say that being a man or woman depends on how you "feel," it goes beyond wearing dresses and heels, or pants and boots. So my question is, what does it mean when you say you "feel like a woman." I want to know what you mean when you say that because all I ever see and hear is "it's not about wearing dresses, it's so much more than that, it's about how you feel." So I'm asking for some clarification, what do you mean when you say you "feel like a woman," or "feel like a man."
In my opinion, trans people put more emphasis on gender roles than cis people because, I don't do things because I "feel like a man or a woman," yet trans people are the ones calling for an end to gender roles. If you say you feel like a man "because I like sports," that implies other people who don't watch sports aren't men. Or if you feel like a woman "because I like shopping," that implies other people who like shopping are women.
All I hear is "it depends on how you feel," so please someone explain to me what it means to "feel like a woman," because I don't understand it.
(p.s. I realize I don't HAVE to understand it for people to do it, I'm just trying to educate myself.) |

| I think the biggest misconception is the idea that a gender role is defined as a cognitive thought process. That's where this argument began. It's the idea that a gender has to be defined in the sense that an animal has to be defined by it's type.
Medically you are defined by your birth gender, and even people that are trans will still be defined as such so let's get that out of the way.
Emotionally, trans identify with the opposite gender. It is in the same vein as saying "I like red." Why do I like red? Because I just like red. It doesn't require a cognitive thought process or a logical reasoning. The color red appeals to me emotionally.
In that vein, the opposing gender may appeal to them emotionally, rather than logically. They don't have a truly logical reasoning as to explain why they desire to be this gender, but emotionally it resonates with them so they choose it.
I'm not someone that can explain this much better than I already have. I'll try to ask my friend if she has any better way of describing it, but that's as best as I can come up with. Sorry if it isn't exactly an answer. |

| I don't mean to come across as black and white on this subject, but I think people confuse gender with who they "emotionally identify" with more. I don't mind trans people, homosexuals, etc, but I think gender is defined by what you're born as. You can't wake up in the morning and tell to yourself, "I feel like a guy today!" and suddenly identify as one when you're actually not. Get the necessary sex change, do whatever you can to make yourself feel more comfortable in your own skin if it helps you feel like you belong. You can't just arbitrarily define gender as a feeling; it's a physical thing. You can say, "I'm emotionally a female but physically a guy," and it would be somewhat sensible, but even then it's a slippery slope because most people are so different in re: to their emotions and feelings. If it's just the physical appearance of the opposite gender that you long for, I consider it a matter of comfort, and I don't oppose that whatsoever. I consider gender more a biological thing rather than culture and behavior since the latter two are so dynamic you couldn't possibly isolate them to one gender alone. |

| I could go into this in more detail, but I'll keep it short.
Sex means you were born with male or female genetics, or have the ability to produce sperm or eggs.
Gender is what you consider yourself to be. It is not the same thing as sex. A lot of people get the two confused. Gender is based on your own personal beliefs of what a man or woman is. Usually this is influenced by society, cultural beliefs, and stereotypes.
So when a transgender person says "I feel like a woman" it would be more accurate for them to say "I feel like what I believe a woman is" and hopefully they are tolerant enough to acknowledge that their definition of a woman may differ from others. |

Couldn't have said it any better. |
