Braindead (re-named Dead Alive in the states) kind of a hidden gem that's over-the-top funny and over-the-top gory. You haven't lived until you've seen a skinny British guy swinging a zombie baby like a steel chair against a swingset. Also this.

Cannibal Holocaust
Warning: It was banned in 30 countries because it contains real animal killings on camera. It's a sick fucking movie though and should only be watched by the truly hard-stomached.
My other favorite is Night Of The Living Dead
-First Modern Horror Movie
-First movie with graphic scenes.
-First mainstream White American movie with negro hero.
-First movie with a tragic ending.
-First movie that had modern zombies.

Yes, it graphic scenes of abortion, rape, and castration. I uploaded a trailer on my original post. Check it out, and the movie too. The message of the movie is actually really powerful and I wouldn't want to spoil it for you.

Jack in the Box
Highly underrated independent horror film with such a dark undertone. The killer is never seen except for small glimpses, and the entire setting is one dark lonely room. It's terrifying and yet brilliant.

Roman Polanski's Apartment Trilogy (Repulsion, The Tenant, Rosemary's Baby) are pretty good psychological horrors.
Cronenberg's The Brood is pretty good.
The aforementioned Peter Jackson's Dead Alive is fun.
John Carpenter's "The Thing" from '82 is great
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is good.
There's this weird twist on the zombie genre called Pontypool that I love that came out a few years ago.
Night of the Living Dead obligatory to put on this list.
More recent ones that have been good were The Babadook and It Follows
I could go on for years about favorite horror because there really isn't a single solitary genre in horror. I just watched Let The Right One In tonight for the 100th time, it's good, and it isn't like anything on this list.
The more lighthearted favorites are Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, Tucker & Dale vs Evil, the Evil Dead trilogy (although it's sort of a quartet now), and Shaun of the Dead

Bubba Ho-Tep. Imagine with me if you will, a world where the Elvis that died wasn't the real Elvis... and that Elvis had been spending the rest of his days as a regular guy in a nursing home after switching lives with an Elvis impersonator. Then while nobody will ever believe he's the real Elvis again, he meets a black man who swears he's John F. Kennedy - saying the CIA switched his brain with that of a random guy they found so they could kill him instead. Then imagine if the nursing home housing these two former Kings in their own right... was visited by another King past his prime? That being a former King of Egypt - a mummy! If you've ever wanted to see Elvis and JFK fight a mummy, then this movie is right up your alley. Oh yeah, and guess who plays Elvis? Bruce fucking Campbell. Give this a watch.
