I always thought zombie shit was stupid before The Walking Dead and tbh other than that show I haven't liked any of the other zombie movies/shows I've watched. So I wouldn't say I'm obsessed.

I've always dug zombie flicks.  There's more to them than what's on the surface, and when done in a non-gimmicky cheap scare Return of the Living Dead sort of way, they're used as a metaphor to reflect humanity and society's problems off of.  I enjoy the Walking Dead for similar reasons.  It's become sort of a Lord of the Flies 'what will man do when left to it's own devices, unchecked by social mores and how long until you become the monster you hate?' sort of thing.  Romero's used it to criticize the government, racism in the south, and other topical issues of the era.  Shaun of the Dead, which I think sort of started the current zombie fandom underground before it blossomed into a wellspring, tackled the idea of being in your 30's, lacking ambition or any sort of identity or direction, and how it ultimately boils down to you winding down as life moves forward, regardless to what major life events try to bring you back into the land of the living.  Ultimately you're just the same dumb, unremarkable twat who wants to take his girlfriend to the pub.  And then there's Dead Alive, which was pretty much saying "Quit living in your parent's shadow and be your own person." in a not-so-subtle erupt-from-giant-mom-vagina-ey sort of way.

It is growing stale, but a lot of major pop culture spring-ups from the punk and nerd landscape have been commercialized to death and lobotomized of substance.  It'd be nice if we were able to pick and choose instead of having a million things beat us over the head with what was once prime sirloin turned hamburger, but we can't.  We just have to wait for comic book films, campy bad scifi, vampires, and zombies to run their course, grow dull to society, and be reclaimed by the true basement dwelling faithful.  The same could be said for wrestling, too.
