| And if so, what's your preferred hat? Beanie, snapback, fitted, etc. I'm honestly not a big fan of snapbacks and find them played out, but yeah. |

| OKAY, FIRST OFF: THAT IS A SNAPBACK, A REAL SNAPBACK! THAT ISN'T A REAL SNAPBACK! Alright, so maybe the examples are a bit dramatized but this is what I'm getting at. The only snapbacks that can be considered "true snapbacks" are ones from mid-90s. Any others are just phony imitations bought by puerile teenagers because they think they look good in them. Snapbacks were ORIGINALLY a cheap alternative to fitted hats, and no, I don't mean a five dollar difference. There was a pretty big difference in the price, and they were bought by ALL age groups. If we saw a 50 year old walking around in today's snapbacks, we'd flame him to no end. I don't know what spiked the surge in snapbacks three or so years ago but it's pretty terrible. As I answered earlier, I have four snapbacks, three 90's era and one snakeskin bill Yankees snapback. I haven't worn any of them in... two years? Sounds about right. The hype for snapbacks, or hats in general isn't nearly at the level it used to be, but it's still there. Although it's not the "cool kids" wearing them anymore, it's the geeks and the nerds who have managed to salvage the scraps. If you've worn snapbacks for 5-10 years, don't worry, I'm not talking about you. I'm talking about the kids who bought their first snapbacks in 2013, the ones that are walking around the halls not matching, wearing a green striped shirt, some beige pants with 45 pockets, and avia sneakers, and then finish off the "fit" with a Chicago Bulls snapback. I'm talking about the kids who walk with 75 pound backpacks and a hunched back. I'm talking about the kid who sits in the back of the class and in January you motion towards your friend sitting next to you and go "who's the new kid?". That kid. The same one who ruined Abercrombie The same one who ruined Ed Hardy The same one who made it un-cool to wear Bar Mitsvah sweatshirts That kid. The one who now wears Armani Exchange even though no one else has for 6 years. The one who stutters when he's called on. The one who lines up at the door to leave and is the first one to leave when the bell rings. That kid. And we make fun of that kid, we make fun of him for wearing these clothes, for doing these things, for continuing these stupid trends. Clothes that we used to wear. Things that we used to do. Trends that we started. It's pretty terrible, a bit sickening, but it's true. But maybe the most puzzling thing about it all is, even though the "cool kids" don't wear them anymore, even though we make fun of the nerds and geeks for wearing them... we still think they're cool. Why? Because they're still prevalent in Hollywood. It's funny how Hollywood, who is so far ahead of everything socially relevant has not only missed the boat on snapbacks, they're stranded on the other side of the island! Now, no, Justin Bieber and Chris Brown aren't wearing sport snapbacks, they're wearing street brand snaps, but still. Maybe I can't speak for the whole world, and I'm not trying to by the way, this is just from where I'm from. A whole community that has moved on to camp hats and bucket hats, and the biggest names in the world are still stuck in 2012. The snapback resurgence of 2011 showcases everything wrong with this current generation. We've become nothing but hypemonsters, not beasts, but monsters. We LEECH ourselves onto something and suck all the life out of it, and then when it suddenly re-emerges a few months later, we laugh at it and we shun it. Completely oblivious to the fact that used to be us. (Except we matched better of course). Snapbacks are the reason our parents laugh at us. Snapbacks are the reason we can't find jobs or get apartments. Snapbacks are the reason the world hates us. Snapbacks, everything wrong with the World today. |
