You have to be presentable. Not as in, drop-dead gorgeous or any of that bullshit. But as in, the overall body of work. If your significant other can't happily show you off, or is reluctant to introduce you to people. Either it be your attitude, your assets (as in job/car/etc etc), or even looks... if you lack in being presentable, well, good luck having that relationship work.
